M19 Movement
The M19 Movement, or Movimiento 19 de Abril, was a Colombian guerrilla group founded in 1970. It emerged in response to allegations of electoral fraud during the presidential elections that year, which favored Misael Pastrana Borrero. The group aimed to promote social justice and political reform through armed struggle, gaining notoriety for its bold actions, including the 1985 takeover of the Palacio de Justicia.
In the late 1980s, the M19 Movement transitioned from armed conflict to political participation. It signed a peace agreement with the Colombian government in 1990, leading to the disarmament of its members and the formation of a political party. The M19's legacy continues to influence Colombian politics and social movements today.
