Mário de Andrade
Mário de Andrade (1893-1945) was a prominent Brazilian writer, musicologist, and playwright, known as one of the leading figures of the modernist movement in Brazil. He played a crucial role in shaping Brazilian literature and culture, emphasizing the importance of national identity and folklore. His most famous work, Macunaíma, is a novel that explores Brazilian culture through the adventures of its titular character.
In addition to his literary contributions, Andrade was also a passionate advocate for Brazilian music and helped to promote the country's diverse musical traditions. He served as the first director of the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art and was instrumental in the development of the São Paulo Art Week in 1922, which marked a significant moment in Brazilian modernism.
