Luffa (Sponge)
Luffa, often referred to as a sponge gourd, is a plant belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is primarily grown in tropical and subtropical regions. The fruit of the luffa plant can be harvested when young and eaten as a vegetable, but when allowed to mature, it becomes fibrous and is commonly used as a natural sponge.
Once the mature fruit is harvested, the outer skin is removed, and the inner fibers are cleaned and dried. These fibers are highly absorbent and are often used in bath sponges, exfoliating scrubs, and even in cleaning products. Luffa sponges are biodegradable and eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic sponges.
