Loma Prieta earthquake
The Loma Prieta earthquake struck on October 17, 1989, in Northern California. It registered a magnitude of 6.9 and lasted about 15 seconds. The epicenter was located near the town of Loma Prieta, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, approximately 60 miles south of San Francisco. The earthquake caused significant damage to buildings, roads, and bridges, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The earthquake resulted in 63 fatalities and over 3,700 injuries. It also led to the collapse of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and the Nimitz Freeway. In response, emergency services and infrastructure improvements were implemented to enhance earthquake preparedness in the region.
