Lithuanian Jewry
Lithuanian Jewry refers to the Jewish community that historically resided in Lithuania. This community has roots dating back to the 14th century and played a significant role in the cultural and economic life of the region. Before World War II, approximately 160,000 Jews lived in Lithuania, contributing to various fields such as trade, education, and the arts.
The Holocaust had a devastating impact on Lithuanian Jewry, with around 90% of the Jewish population being killed during the Nazi occupation. Today, the Jewish community in Lithuania is much smaller, but efforts continue to preserve its rich heritage, including the restoration of synagogues and the commemoration of historical sites related to Jewish history in the region.
