Lithospheric Plates
Lithospheric plates are large sections of the Earth's outer shell, known as the lithosphere, which includes the crust and the upper part of the mantle. These plates float on the semi-fluid layer beneath them called the asthenosphere. The movement of these plates is driven by forces such as mantle convection, gravity, and the Earth's rotation.
There are several major lithospheric plates, including the Pacific Plate, North American Plate, and Eurasian Plate. The interactions between these plates can lead to geological events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the formation of mountain ranges. Understanding lithospheric plates is essential for studying Earth's geology and tectonic activity.
