Linguistic Functions
Linguistic functions refer to the various purposes that language serves in communication. These functions include expressing emotions, conveying information, asking questions, and making requests. Each function plays a crucial role in how we interact with others and share our thoughts and feelings.
One well-known framework for understanding linguistic functions is proposed by Roman Jakobson, who identified six key functions: referential, emotive, conative, phatic, metalinguistic, and poetic. Each function highlights a different aspect of language use, emphasizing how context and intention shape communication.
