Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins
Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins was a key figure in the Chilean War of Independence against Spanish rule. Born on August 20, 1778, in Chillán, Chile, he was the son of a Spanish governor and a Chilean woman. O'Higgins played a crucial role in organizing and leading military campaigns that ultimately led to Chile's independence in 1818.
After independence, O'Higgins served as the Supreme Director of Chile from 1817 to 1823. His leadership focused on establishing a stable government and promoting education and infrastructure. However, political opposition led to his resignation, and he spent the rest of his life in exile in Peru, where he died on October 24, 1842.
