Lewis Chessmen
The Lewis Chessmen are a famous set of medieval chess pieces discovered on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland in 1831. Dating back to the 12th century, they are made from walrus ivory and whale teeth, showcasing intricate carvings that depict various characters, including kings, queens, knights, and pawns.
These chessmen are believed to have been crafted in Norway, reflecting the Viking influence in the region. Today, the Lewis Chessmen are housed in the British Museum and the National Museum of Scotland, where they are celebrated for their historical significance and artistic detail.
