Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy
Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) is a genetic condition that primarily affects vision. It is caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA, leading to the death of optic nerve cells. This results in sudden vision loss, typically in young adult males, although it can affect anyone.
The condition often starts with blurred vision and can progress to complete blindness in one or both eyes. While there is currently no cure for LHON, some individuals may experience partial recovery of vision over time. Genetic counseling can help affected families understand the risks and implications of this hereditary disorder.
