Leatherback
The Leatherback turtle is the largest species of sea turtle, known for its distinctive leathery shell instead of a hard one. They can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and grow as long as 6 to 9 feet. Leatherbacks are unique among turtles because they can dive to great depths, often reaching over 4,000 feet in search of jellyfish, their primary food source.
These turtles are found in oceans worldwide, from the tropics to the temperate regions. Unfortunately, Leatherback turtles are classified as vulnerable due to threats like habitat loss, climate change, and entanglement in fishing gear. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect their populations.
