Latrodectus hasselti
Latrodectus hasselti, commonly known as the redback spider, is a species of venomous spider native to Australia. It is easily recognized by its glossy black body and distinctive red or orange stripe on the upper side of its abdomen. These spiders typically inhabit dry, sheltered areas, such as under rocks, logs, and in human-made structures.
The redback spider is known for its potent venom, which can cause serious symptoms in humans, although fatalities are rare due to effective antivenom. They are primarily nocturnal and feed on insects, using their webs to trap prey.
