Latrodectus Mactans
Latrodectus mactans, commonly known as the black widow spider, is a venomous spider found primarily in the United States. It is recognizable by its glossy black body and the distinctive red hourglass marking on the underside of its abdomen. These spiders prefer dark, sheltered areas and are often found in woodpiles, sheds, and basements.
The bite of a black widow spider can be dangerous, especially to children and the elderly, causing severe pain and muscle cramps. However, fatalities are rare due to the availability of medical treatment. Despite their fearsome reputation, black widow spiders are generally not aggressive and will only bite in self-defense.
