Laryngotracheobronchitis
Laryngotracheobronchitis, commonly known as croup, is an inflammation of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi. It primarily affects young children and is often caused by viral infections, particularly the parainfluenza virus. Symptoms include a distinctive barking cough, hoarseness, and difficulty breathing, especially at night.
Treatment for laryngotracheobronchitis focuses on relieving symptoms. Mild cases may be managed at home with humidified air and fluids, while more severe cases may require medical intervention, such as corticosteroids or nebulized epinephrine. Most children recover fully within a few days to a week.
