Larsen A
Larsen A is a small ice shelf located in the Antarctic Peninsula. It is part of the larger Larsen Ice Shelf system and is situated on the eastern side of the peninsula. The ice shelf plays a crucial role in stabilizing the glaciers that flow into it, acting as a barrier to prevent them from rapidly entering the ocean.
In 1995, Larsen A collapsed, losing a significant portion of its mass. This event was attributed to rising temperatures and changing climatic conditions in the region. The collapse of ice shelves like Larsen A can contribute to rising sea levels, as they no longer hold back the glaciers behind them.
