Lake Monoun
Lake Monoun is a crater lake located in the western highlands of Cameroon. It is situated at an elevation of about 1,100 meters and is known for its scenic beauty and rich biodiversity. The lake is approximately 4.5 kilometers long and 2.5 kilometers wide, surrounded by lush vegetation and hills.
In 1984, Lake Monoun gained international attention due to a tragic incident involving a limnic eruption, where a sudden release of carbon dioxide from the lake caused the deaths of 37 people in the nearby village. This event highlighted the potential dangers of crater lakes, similar to those associated with Lake Nyos, another well-known lake in the region.
