Lake Gatun
Lake Gatun is an artificial lake located in Panama, created in the early 20th century as part of the construction of the Panama Canal. It covers an area of approximately 164 square miles and serves as a crucial waterway for ships transiting the canal.
The lake was formed by damming the Chagres River and is situated about 26 meters above sea level. It plays a vital role in the operation of the canal, providing the necessary water for the locks and serving as a habitat for various wildlife, including birds and aquatic species.
