LVAD
A Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is a mechanical pump used to support heart function in patients with severe heart failure. It helps the left ventricle pump blood to the rest of the body, improving circulation and reducing symptoms like fatigue and shortness of breath. LVADs can be used as a temporary solution while waiting for a heart transplant or as a long-term therapy for those who are not candidates for transplantation.
The device is implanted surgically and consists of a pump, a controller, and a power source. Patients with an LVAD require regular follow-up care to monitor their heart health and device function. While LVADs can significantly enhance quality of life, they also come with risks, including infection and blood clots.
