LHRH agonists
LHRH agonists, or luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonists, are synthetic hormones that mimic the natural hormone LHRH. They are primarily used in the treatment of hormone-sensitive conditions, such as certain types of prostate cancer and breast cancer. By stimulating the pituitary gland, these agonists initially increase the production of hormones like testosterone and estrogen, but eventually lead to a decrease in their levels.
These medications work by creating a feedback loop that suppresses the release of gonadotropins, which are hormones that stimulate the ovaries and testes. As a result, LHRH agonists help to slow the growth of hormone-dependent tumors and manage symptoms associated with these conditions.
