L-lactate
L-lactate is a compound produced in the body during the process of anaerobic metabolism, which occurs when oxygen levels are low. It is a byproduct of glucose breakdown and is commonly associated with intense exercise, where muscles require energy quickly. L-lactate can be converted back into glucose in the liver through a process called gluconeogenesis.
In addition to its role in energy production, L-lactate serves as an important signaling molecule. It helps regulate various physiological processes, including pH balance in the body and the production of energy in cells. Elevated levels of L-lactate can indicate conditions such as lactic acidosis, which may occur in certain medical situations.
