L'Anse aux Meadows
L'Anse aux Meadows is a historic site located on the northern tip of Newfoundland, Canada. It is recognized as the first known European settlement in North America, established by the Vikings around the year 1000 AD. The site features the remains of eight Norse buildings, including a longhouse, and provides evidence of the Viking presence in the region.
Discovered in the 1960s by archaeologist Helge Ingstad and his wife, Anne Stine Ingstad, L'Anse aux Meadows was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The findings at this site have significantly contributed to our understanding of Norse exploration and their interactions with indigenous peoples.
