Kushiro Wetland
The Kushiro Wetland is Japan's largest wetland, located in Hokkaido. It covers an area of approximately 27,000 hectares and is home to diverse ecosystems, including marshes, rivers, and forests. The wetland is recognized for its rich biodiversity, supporting various plant and animal species, some of which are endangered.
Designated as a Ramsar Site in 2005, the Kushiro Wetland plays a crucial role in water purification and flood control. It is also a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, offering opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and photography, particularly of the rare Japanese crane.
