Kursk Submarine
The {Kursk} was a Russian nuclear-powered submarine that sank in the Barents Sea on August 12, 2000. It was part of the {Russian Navy} and was conducting naval exercises when a catastrophic explosion occurred, leading to the loss of all 118 crew members on board. The incident raised significant concerns about submarine safety and the effectiveness of emergency response protocols.
The wreck of the {Kursk} was discovered in 2001 at a depth of about 1,500 feet. Recovery efforts were complicated by harsh weather conditions and the submarine's location. In 2002, the submarine was raised from the seabed, and investigations revealed that a faulty torpedo was likely the cause of the explosion.
