Kurdish YPG
The Kurdish YPG, or People's Protection Units, is a militia group primarily composed of Kurdish fighters in Syria. Formed in 2011 during the Syrian Civil War, the YPG aims to protect Kurdish regions and promote autonomy for the Kurdish people. It has gained international attention for its role in combating extremist groups like ISIS.
The YPG is affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been involved in a long-standing conflict with the Turkish government. While the YPG has received support from the United States and other allies in the fight against terrorism, its ties to the PKK have led to tensions with Turkey, which considers the YPG a terrorist organization.
