Kruonis Hydroelectric Pumped Storage Plant
The Kruonis Hydroelectric Pumped Storage Plant is located in Lithuania and serves as a key component of the country's energy system. It was commissioned in 1992 and has a total installed capacity of 900 megawatts, making it one of the largest pumped storage facilities in the Baltic region. The plant helps balance electricity supply and demand by storing energy during low-demand periods and releasing it during peak demand.
The facility operates by using two reservoirs at different elevations. Water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper one when there is excess electricity, and it is released back down to generate power when needed. This process enhances grid stability and supports the integration of renewable energy sources like wind and solar.
