Kokanee salmon
Kokanee salmon are a landlocked variety of the sockeye salmon, primarily found in freshwater lakes in North America. They are known for their vibrant red coloration during spawning, which typically occurs in the fall. Kokanee salmon can grow to about 24 inches long and weigh up to 5 pounds, although sizes can vary.
These fish have a unique life cycle, starting as eggs that hatch in gravel beds. After spending time in freshwater, they migrate to lakes where they live for several years before returning to their spawning grounds. Kokanee salmon play a vital role in their ecosystems, providing food for various predators.
