King Otto of Greece
King Otto of Greece was the first king of the modern Greek state, ruling from 1832 to 1862. Born in 1815 in Bavaria, he was chosen as king when Greece gained independence from the Ottoman Empire. Otto's reign faced challenges, including political instability and opposition from various factions within Greece.
During his rule, Otto attempted to modernize the country and establish a constitutional monarchy. However, his foreign origins and autocratic style led to dissatisfaction among the Greek people. In 1862, he was deposed and left Greece, marking the end of his reign and the beginning of a new chapter in Greek history.
