King Antiochus II
King Antiochus II, also known as Antiochus II Theos, was a ruler of the Seleucid Empire from 261 to 246 BCE. He was the son of Antiochus I Soter and Stratonice of Syria. His reign was marked by conflicts with the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, particularly during the Syrian Wars, as he sought to expand his territory and influence.
Antiochus II is notable for his marriage to Berenice Syra, the daughter of the Egyptian king Ptolemy II Philadelphus, which was intended to solidify an alliance. However, this union was short-lived, and after Berenice's death, he returned to his first wife, Laodice I, leading to further political strife within his kingdom.
