King Afonso I
King Afonso I, also known as Afonso I of Kongo, was the first king of the Kingdom of Kongo, ruling from 1506 to 1543. He played a significant role in establishing Christianity in the region, converting to Catholicism and promoting the faith among his people. His reign marked a period of cultural exchange between the Kingdom of Kongo and Portugal.
Afonso I strengthened the central authority of his kingdom and expanded its territory through diplomacy and military campaigns. He established trade relations with Europe and sought to modernize his kingdom by adopting European customs and governance practices. His leadership helped shape the early history of Central Africa.
