Kandyan Kingdom
The Kandyan Kingdom was a significant historical kingdom in Sri Lanka, existing from the late 15th century until the British conquest in 1815. It was located in the central highlands and was known for its rich culture, unique traditions, and resistance against colonial powers. The kingdom's capital was Kandy, which became a center for Buddhist learning and the home of the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha.
The Kandyan Kingdom played a crucial role in preserving Sri Lankan identity and culture during colonial rule. Its rulers, such as King Vimaladharmasuriya II, promoted Buddhism and arts, contributing to the kingdom's legacy. The kingdom's eventual fall marked the end of Sri Lanka's independent kingdoms and the beginning of British colonial rule.
