K-278 Komsomolets
The K-278 Komsomolets is a Soviet nuclear-powered attack submarine, launched in 1983. It was the first submarine of the Project 685 class, designed for deep-sea operations and equipped with advanced technology for its time. The Komsomolets was notable for its ability to dive to great depths and carry a variety of weapons, including torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.
Tragically, the K-278 Komsomolets sank in 1989 after a fire broke out on board during a training exercise in the Barents Sea. Of the 118 crew members, 42 lost their lives. The submarine remains at the ocean floor, serving as a reminder of the risks associated with military operations.
