July 22 Attacks
The July 22 Attacks refer to a series of violent events that occurred in Norway on July 22, 2011. The attacks were carried out by a far-right extremist named Anders Behring Breivik, who first detonated a car bomb in Oslo, killing eight people. He then traveled to the island of Utøya, where he opened fire on a Workers' Youth League camp, resulting in the deaths of 69 individuals, mostly teenagers.
The attacks shocked Norway and the world, leading to widespread discussions about terrorism, extremism, and national security. In 2012, Breivik was convicted and sentenced to 21 years in prison, a term that can be extended indefinitely as long as he is deemed a threat to society. The events prompted Norway to reflect on its values of tolerance and democracy.
