Julian Corbett
Julian Corbett was a British naval historian and strategist, born in 1854 and known for his influential works on maritime strategy. He emphasized the importance of sea power in national defense and the role of naval operations in supporting land campaigns. His most notable work, Some Principles of Maritime Strategy, published in 1911, laid the foundation for modern naval theory.
Corbett's ideas contrasted with those of Alfred Thayer Mahan, another prominent naval strategist, by focusing on the interplay between naval and military operations. He believed that successful maritime strategy required a comprehensive understanding of both sea and land warfare, influencing naval thought well into the 20th century.
