Joseph Mobutu
Joseph Mobutu, also known as Mobutu Sese Seko, was a military officer and politician who ruled the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1965 to 1997. He came to power through a coup and established a one-party state, promoting a form of nationalism that emphasized African identity. Mobutu's regime was marked by widespread corruption and human rights abuses.
During his rule, Mobutu implemented policies that aimed to modernize the country, but his government was often criticized for its authoritarian nature. He was known for his lavish lifestyle and maintained power through a strong military presence. His reign ended when he was ousted during the First Congo War, leading to significant political changes in the region.
