José Burgos
José Burgos was a Filipino priest and a prominent figure in the Philippine reform movement during the 19th century. Born on February 9, 1837, in Pangasinan, he became known for advocating for the rights of Filipinos and the secularization of the clergy. His writings and speeches called for reforms in the Spanish colonial government and the Catholic Church.
Burgos was one of the three martyrs, along with Mariano Gómez and Jacinto Zamora, executed in 1872 for allegedly inciting a rebellion. Their deaths sparked outrage and became a rallying point for the growing nationalist movement in the Philippines, influencing future leaders like José Rizal.
