Joliet Prison
Joliet Prison, officially known as the Illinois State Penitentiary, was a maximum-security prison located in Joliet, Illinois. Opened in 1858, it housed thousands of inmates over its long history, becoming known for its distinctive Limestone architecture. The prison was designed to reform rather than just punish, but it faced criticism for overcrowding and harsh conditions.
In 2002, Joliet Prison was closed due to safety concerns and budget issues. Since its closure, the site has gained attention for its historical significance and has been featured in various films and television shows. Efforts have been made to preserve the prison as a potential tourist attraction.
