John Harvard was an English minister and the founding benefactor of Harvard University, one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. He was born in 1607 in London and emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637. After his death in 1638, he left half of his estate and his library to the college, which was named in his honor.
