Jean-Dominique Bauby
Jean-Dominique Bauby was a French journalist and author, best known for his memoir, *The Diving Bell and the Butterfly*. Born on April 23, 1952, he served as the editor of the French fashion magazine Elle before suffering a massive stroke in 1995, which left him with locked-in syndrome. This condition rendered him almost completely paralyzed, but he retained his cognitive abilities and vision.
Despite his physical limitations, Bauby dictated his memoir by blinking his left eye, which was the only part of his body he could move. The book, published in 1997, received critical acclaim and was later adapted into a film directed by Julian Schnabel. Bauby passed away on March 9, 1997, just days after the book's publication.
