Jaja of Opobo
Jaja of Opobo was a prominent 19th-century Nigerian leader and merchant. Born in 1821, he was originally named Jubo Jubogha and became a significant figure in the Niger Delta region. Jaja founded the Opobo kingdom after breaking away from the Bonny kingdom, establishing a thriving trade network, particularly in palm oil.
As a skilled trader and diplomat, Jaja played a crucial role in the economic development of the area. His leadership was marked by resistance against British colonial influence, which ultimately led to his exile in 1887. Jaja's legacy remains influential in Nigerian history and culture.
