Jōdo
Jōdo is a school of Pure Land Buddhism that emphasizes faith in Amitābha Buddha and the aspiration to be reborn in the Pure Land, a realm of enlightenment. Followers believe that by reciting the nembutsu, or the name of Amitābha, they can attain salvation and a better rebirth.
Founded in the 12th century by Hōnen, Jōdo Buddhism became popular in Japan as it offered a more accessible path to enlightenment compared to other Buddhist practices. It encourages devotion and reliance on Amitābha's grace, making it appealing to people from various backgrounds seeking spiritual solace.
