Islamic Salvation Front
The Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) is a political party in Algeria that was founded in 1989. It aimed to establish an Islamic state based on Sharia law and gained significant popularity in the early 1990s. The party won a majority in the first round of the 1991 legislative elections, which led to a political crisis in the country.
Following the election, the Algerian government canceled the elections, leading to widespread violence and a civil war between the state and various Islamist groups, including the FIS. The party was eventually banned in 1992, and many of its leaders were arrested or went into exile.
