Front Islamique du Salut
The Front Islamique du Salut (FIS) was an Islamist political party in Algeria, founded in 1989. It aimed to establish an Islamic state based on Sharia law and gained significant popularity in the early 1990s. The FIS won a majority in the 1991 parliamentary elections, which led to a political crisis and the cancellation of the elections by the government.
Following the election crisis, the FIS was banned in 1992, leading to a violent civil conflict known as the Algerian Civil War. The group became associated with armed resistance against the government, resulting in widespread violence and instability in Algeria throughout the 1990s.
