Irish Land Commission
The Irish Land Commission was established in 1881 to address land ownership issues in Ireland. Its primary goal was to promote land reform by redistributing land from large estates to smaller farmers, thereby improving agricultural productivity and social equity. The Commission played a significant role in the land purchase system, allowing tenants to buy land at affordable rates.
Over the years, the Commission facilitated the transfer of over 1.5 million acres of land. It operated until 1999, when its functions were transferred to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The legacy of the Irish Land Commission continues to influence land policies in Ireland today.
