Irene Parlby
Irene Parlby was a Canadian politician and a prominent advocate for women's rights. Born on January 9, 1877, in England, she immigrated to Canada in 1896. Parlby became one of the first women elected to the Alberta legislature in 1921 and served as a member of the United Farmers of Alberta party. She was instrumental in promoting social reforms, particularly in areas like education and healthcare.
In addition to her political career, Parlby was a key figure in the federation of women’s institutes and played a significant role in the establishment of the Alberta Women’s Institute. Her efforts contributed to the advancement of women's rights in Canada, and she was recognized for her work by being appointed to the Order of Canada in 1970.
