Iowa Tribes
The Iowa Tribes are Native American groups originally from the region that is now known as Iowa. Historically, they were part of the larger Sioux and Algonquian language families and were known for their agricultural practices, hunting, and fishing. The tribes played a significant role in the early history of the area, interacting with European settlers and other Indigenous groups.
Today, the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska and the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma are the two federally recognized tribes. They work to preserve their cultural heritage, language, and traditions while also engaging in economic development and community services for their members.
