Ioannis Metaxas
Ioannis Metaxas was a Greek general and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Greece from 1936 until his death in 1941. He is best known for establishing a dictatorial regime known as the Metaxas Regime, which emphasized nationalism and authoritarianism. Metaxas came to power through a coup and sought to suppress political opposition while promoting a strong military.
During his leadership, Metaxas faced significant challenges, including the Italian invasion of Greece in 1940. He famously declared "Ohi" (meaning "No") in response to the invasion, which rallied Greek resistance. His government aligned with the Axis powers but ultimately fell when Nazi Germany invaded Greece in 1941.
