Intestinal Villus
The intestinal villus is a small, finger-like projection found in the lining of the small intestine. These structures increase the surface area available for absorption, allowing nutrients from digested food to enter the bloodstream more efficiently. Each villus is covered with even smaller hair-like structures called microvilli, which further enhance absorption.
Intestinal villi play a crucial role in the digestive system by facilitating the uptake of essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. A healthy population of villi is vital for proper digestion and overall health, as damage to these structures can lead to malabsorption and various gastrointestinal disorders.
