Indo-Surinamese
Indo-Surinamese refers to the descendants of Indian laborers who migrated to Suriname in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Primarily from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, these workers were brought to cultivate sugarcane and other crops after the abolition of slavery. Today, they form a significant part of Suriname's multicultural society.
The Indo-Surinamese community has maintained its cultural heritage, including language, cuisine, and festivals. Many speak Hindi or Sarnami, a Hindi-based creole, and celebrate traditional festivals like Diwali and Holi. Their contributions have enriched Suriname's cultural landscape, blending Indian traditions with local influences.
