Indirect Contempt
Indirect contempt refers to actions that disrespect or undermine the authority of a court, but do not occur in the court's immediate presence. This can include failing to comply with a court order, such as not paying child support or violating a restraining order. The court may take action against the individual for these violations, even if they did not occur in the courtroom.
To address indirect contempt, the affected party typically files a motion with the court. If the court finds sufficient evidence, it may impose penalties, which can include fines or even jail time, to enforce compliance and uphold its authority.
