Indian Mounds
Indian mounds are earthworks built by Indigenous peoples in North America, primarily between 1000 BCE and 1600 CE. These mounds served various purposes, including burial sites, ceremonial centers, and platforms for structures. They are often found in clusters and vary in shape, such as conical, effigy, or platform mounds.
Many Indian mounds are located in the Mississippi River Valley and the Great Lakes region. Some of the most notable sites include Cahokia Mounds in Illinois and Serpent Mound in Ohio. These mounds provide valuable insights into the social, religious, and cultural practices of the Indigenous communities that built them.
